April is the time to plant crops that thrive in the cool weather, like lettuce. When choosing seeds, look for heirloom seeds. This will be plainly displayed on the seed packet. Choose wilt resistant or slow-bolt lettuce and spinach. A variety of colors will grow from a “salad blend” like the picture here. These will produce colorful, nutritious salads. Prepare the soil with some good organic plant food a few days before planting. Plant according to the directions on the packet. Cover the seeds lightly with soil and keep them moist by watering with a spray bottle. (Watering with a hose will cause the seeds to wash away.) You can plant every couple of weeks for continuous crops that will last you all through the summer.
